Rolls are some times referred to as coils in different books.

General Rolling Directions

Dampen your thumb and index finger slightly and place the tip of your paper in your finger, then place the tool that you are going to roll with over it.

With your thumb bend the tip of the paper over the tool at the same time roll the paper forward making sure you are rolling the paper around the needle.

Roll evenly the entire strip of paper, keeping the edges as even as possible and your pressure even on the paper.

After it is completely rolled remove it from the tool.

Let the paper unroll slightly, (for any rolls except the tight roll).

Place a dab of glue at the tip of the inner surface to seal it into place.

Hold the roll shut for a couple seconds to assure that it closes.

tight roll  

Tight Roll sometimes called a peg or a tight circle - roll evenly from one end of a paper strip to another. Hold for a moment before gluing; glue without uncoiling any of it. When a pattern has a reference to a peg it is usually used to hold up part of a pattern or shape. Top

loose roll   Loose Roll - roll evenly from one end of a strip of paper to the other end. Let it uncoil to the size that you want it. Then glue the end to the roll. To get uniform sizes in your rolls place in the quilling design board so that the roll will only open to the size you wish. Top
teardrop  

Tear Drop – roll a loose roll pinch one end into a point and leave the other end rounded. Top

marquese  

Marquise some times called eye or diamond – roll a loose roll pinch both ends to form a point at each end. Top

square  

Square some times called a diamond – roll a loose roll pinch four corners into the roll at equal distances around the roll. Top

body  

Body - Roll a loose roll and squish it flat between two fingers. Top

petal  

Petal – sometimes called a shaped tear drop. Roll a tear drop and put a bend in the point. Top

pressed heart  

Pressed Heart – sometimes called a rolled heart or shield – roll a loose roll with one end pinched twice make an indentation between the points by pushing the handle of the quilling tool into the center wrapping the pinched ends around the tool. Leave the opposite end rounded. Top

holy leaf  

Holly Leaf – roll a square and put a slight indentation in between each of the points. Top

half moon  

Half Moon sometimes called crescent roll – roll a loose roll slightly pinch two points into the roll indenting between the two points. Top

shaped marquise  

Shaped Marquise sometimes called leaf shape – roll a marquise. Bend the points slightly in opposite directions. Top

bunny ear  

Bunny Ear – this is just like the half moon only the points are more defined. Top

half circle  

Half Circle – roll a loose circle press one side of it to form a flat side. Top

grape roll  

Grape Roll - make a tight roll then gently push the center out slightly forming a type of dome. Use your finger for a more rounded form or one of the quilling tools for a more pointed form. Be careful you don't push too much or it will ruin the roll. After getting the roll to the desired shape place a thin layer of glue on the inside to maintain the shape of the roll.  Top

arrow  

Arrow sometimes called a dart – make a loose roll push down the center pinch the two ends and point the bottom. Top

star  

Star – make a square push the sides in to form inside points. Top

rectangle  

Rectangle – make a loose roll, pinch the roll making four points unlike the square make two sides longer than the other two. Top

triangle  

Triangle - roll a loose roll pinch three corners into it like a half circle with a corner instead of a rounded end. Top

tulip  

Tulip - Roll a loose roll shape into a half circle and in-between the two corners add a third corner sticking striate up. Top

shaped tear drop  

Shaped Tear Drop – make a tear drop shape then curl the top point to one side. Top

fringed flower  

Fringed Flower - take a wide strip of paper (1/4 inch or larger) and put a fringe on it eater using the fringing tool or scissors. Then roll into a tight roll and glue. When the glue is dry open up the fringed part of the flower to its desired fullness. If desired use the needle tool to curl some of the fringes. Top

Fringed Flower w/Center - take a wide strip of paper (1/4 inch or larger) and put a fringe on it eater using the fringing tool or scissors. Then attach a thin strip of paper to it (1/8 inch or smaller) by gluing at one end. After the glue is dry roll into a tight roll starting with the thin strip of paper and glue. When the glue is dry open it up to its desired fullness. If desired use the needle tool to curl some of the fringes. Top

fan  

Fan – like the marquise only the center is down to the bottom and the top is much bigger than the bottom. Top
